Teaching English as a Foreign Language Lesson Plans

For the teaching component, I volunteered at the Chinatown YMCA in New York City and provided lessons to a student from Japan. Throughout the certification process, I reflected on the broader significance of teaching English, particularly in the context of colonization. This reflection inspired me to incorporate the history of the Black diaspora into my lessons, recognizing the importance of teaching beyond language and fostering cultural awareness.

For my final assignments, I developed lesson plans designed for learners of various ages, focusing on three influential Black women in history: Sister Rosetta Tharpe, a trailblazer in rock-and-roll; Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan environmental activist and Nobel laureate; and Audre Lorde, an award-winning poet and activist. Below, I’ve included two of the lesson plans I created, centered on Wangari Maathai and Rosetta Tharpe.
